This fall, the sisters of Sigma Alpha volunteered at Fair Weather Farm, a local farm in Fair Hill Maryland. The farm strives to teach the local community about agriculture and encourages people to strive for healthy lifestyles by incorporating fresh foods and natural remedies into their everyday lives. We visited the farm twice and helped with farm chores including harvesting peppers, preparing the plots for winter, trimming herbs and cleaning wool. During our visit, we also learned about the farm’s livestock and seasonal programs within the community. This experience was a great opportunity to leave Newark’s city campus and spend time together outdoors. Many of the girls appreciated the therapeutic benefits of yard work and spending time with animals. In addition to helping the farm staff, we also learned a lot about local native species of plants and Delaware agriculture. As an agricultural sorority, this information was invaluable.
It was truly inspiring to see the impact Fair Weather Farm has had on the community. With Newark and the local area being a mixture of a city and suburban environment, there is a need for organizations which teach the community about where their food comes from and how it is made. By giving community members the tools and confidence to make healthier choices, farms such as Fair Weather Farm can make a big change in the community. Additionally, Fair Weather Farm can change people’s perceptions of agriculture and encourage them to be more involved in local agriculture. I was so happy to be able to help Fair Weather Farm and their mission. We definitely plan to visit the farm in the Spring and continue to help them positively influence the community
