Boo at the Zoo

Boo at the Zoo is an event held at the Brandywine Zoo where kids can dress up in their Halloween costumes and trick or treat in the zoo. We volunteered to help pass out candy to the kids. We decided to go with a scarecrow theme, so we all dressed up like scarecrows and we had some information about the history of scarecrows. We were helping families in Wilmington to have a unique and fun trick or treating experience in the zoo.

This event reminded me how much I like kids and how fun it is to help them learn. My experience was pretty much what I expected except it was more fun! I loved being able to see all the kids dressed up in their Halloween costumes. It was funny to see them almost forget where they were because they were so caught up in the fun of trick or treating. Then they would hear one of the owls screech and they would remember that they were in a zoo and get so excited. I learned that trick or treating in the Brandywine zoo is a really fun tradition for lots of families around here. Wilmington is not the safest city and is not the best environment to take kids around trick or treating in. Boo at the Zoo addresses these needs because it provides a safe and fun place for kids to trick or treat in the city while also allowing the community to be involved.

I had never heard of Boo at the Zoo before and I didn't realize that zoos did this kind of community outreach. By learning this, it has opened my mind to new ways we can get involved in our community to address their needs. I would like to learn more about what other kinds of community events the zoo holds or helps with. This community service activity was a fun way to help our community's children have a fun and safe trick or treating experience and I wouldn't change a thing! I can't wait for next year!
